The annual 4th of July rodeo was extremely popular with all Odessans. It was held originally on Texas Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets. As the city grew, the rodeo grounds were moved to Floyd Gwin park. From here it evolved into the annual Sandhills Hereford and Quarter Horse Show and Rodeo. This international event initiates the world championship cowboy competition and brings cowboys and exhibitors from all over the country to Odessa's Ector County Coliseum.
